Access to safe water and sanitation is essential to human health, environmental sustainability and economic prosperity. This vital resource is under threat, making it crucial to address the challenges related to water, sanitation and hygiene for populations and water-related ecosystems. Achieving universal access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, and ensuring such services are safely managed; remain major challenges which meeting them is crucial to for further progress in health, education and poverty eradication. More than 2 billion people are affected by water stress, defined as the ratio of total freshwater withdrawn to total renewable freshwater resources above a threshold of 25 per cent, which will increase with population growth and the effects of climate change. Hygienic sanitation facilities are crucial for public health. As per the WHO, since 1990, the number of people gaining access to improved sanitation has risen from %54 to %68 but some 2.3 billion people still do not have toilets or improved latrines.
The Arab Water Week (AWW) is a biennial international assembly in the Arab region that attracts decision makers, water management practitioners, and professional organizations from the international arena and across the region. It was firstly launched in Amman, Jordan in December 2010, and organized by the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA) in partnership with the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) and the League of Arab States- Arab Ministerial Water Council (LAS- AMWC). AWW is a unique international event in the Arab region, which tackles water management issues through establishing innovative partnerships and platforms of collaborative work on water and wastewater issues in the region. The importance of this event lies in providing a platform for greater coordination among the existing network of key stakeholders active in the water sector in the region. AWW does not only provide an opportunity to define and enhance communication channels, create synergies and share successful experiences and best practices, but also facilitates the creation of new partnerships that complement and maximize the impact of on-going work in this sector for the benefit of all countries in the region.
The 6th AWW are a unique opportunity for the water and wastewater management community in the Arab region. It is the place where professionals, water management experts, private sector, and institutions of all types meet and exchange ideas, knowledge and experiences, discuss problems and be exposed to the state of the art of new technologies and solutions. The 6th AWW provides a broad technical and policy-oriented program, along with a specialized exhibition (The Arab Water Trade Fair) targeting water supply and wastewater vendor’s and other service providers in the water sector.
ACWUA expects more than 500 participants and delegations to attend 6th AWW in Amman – Jordan from approximately 35 countries. Numerous of ACWUA’s members will be joining, which are consisting of 500 individual members along with more than 100 water and wastewater utilities from 18 Arab Countries, namely; Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. In addition to international participation from many other countries, such as: Turkey, Germany, Pakistan, South Korea, China among others. The 6th AWW aim to attract senior decision makers from public and private sectors, water and wastewater utilities/water supply companies, water ministries & authorities, environmental agencies & ministries, municipalities, utility operators, private sector companies and consultants and educational institutions from the international arena and across the region.
