Standardization and Certification in Managing Water Utilities in the Arab Region


Arab countries water utilities association (ACWUA) plays a leader role in the development of innovative water solutions with noteworthy achievements and capacity building on best practices in managing water and wastewater utilities. One of ACWUA’s important objectives is promoting for standards of performance for governance, management, operation of water supply and wastewater utilities in the Arab region.

Standardization brings important benefits to industries and businesses including a solid foundation upon which to develop new technologies and an opportunity to share and en-hance existing practices.

Standardization also plays a pivotal role in assisting Governments, Administrations, Regulators and the legal profession as legislation, regulation and policy initiatives are all supported by standardization.

Certification and standardization are tools to help us manage our shared water resources equitably and durably. International water standards build confidence through consensus-based global solutions for good business practice, management of resources, risk assessment, metrics and infrastructure. They facilitate sustainable water management and increase water potential, helping alleviate water scarcity and contributing to achieving the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

Building on the success of the previous best practices conferences; ACWUA 6th Best Practices conference in Algeria is a unique opportunity and platform to employ the topic of standardization and certification sharing as integrated solution for water and wastewater management in the Arab World.

Why to attend ACWUA’s 6th Best Practices Conference?

The conference is particularly significant and valuable for the critical importance of certification and standardization of water utilities’ performance.

The technical program of the conference will enable all participants to learn from international experts and from the case studies of the certified projects implemented in water utilities in the Arab region, also aims to share and exchange the local experiences on standardization efforts with the international water community and summaries the lessons learned from each case study. Discussion and comments will be targeting and focusing on developing regional projects on standardization and certification in water and wastewater utilities.

The conference will provide a broad technical presentation and policy-based program, targeting water management and wastewater experts, regulators and other service providers in the water sector.

Who will attend?

ACWUA expect more than 400 participants and delegations to attend the 6th Best Practices Conference in Algeria. Many will be coming from ACWUA membership comprising of more than 300 individual members, and more than 110 water and wastewater utilities from 18 Arab Countries; Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The 6th Best Practices Conference is also aimed at senior decision makers from public and private water and waste water utilities/water supply companies, regulators, water ministries & authorities, environmental agencies & ministries, municipalities, utility operators, private sector companies and consultants and educational institutions internationally and across the region.

This year focus area will be Standardization and certification as best practice in managing water utilities in the Arab region.

The following is a selection of key themes which the Scientific Committee is seeking contributions; papers addressing these issues from the Arab Region and international water community are welcomed and encouraged.

Papers are expected to make an original and substantial contribution to the conference themes and topics.

Speakers who are interested in presenting a paper should send an abstract for refereeing. Paper proposals will be selected by the conference scientific committee to cover different areas, methods, approaches and positions.
