ACWUA Launching On 30 July 2009, the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA), founded with assistance of ESCWA and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development through its Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ), was officially launched in Amman, Jordan. The celebration was held under the patronage of His Excellency, the Minister of Water and Irrigation of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan at the Intercontinental Hotel, Amman. Over eighty high ranking personalities from all over the Arab world and other countries participated in this special event, including members of ACWUA’s Board of Directors, heads of Arab water utilities, donor agencies and international organizations, experts and representatives from the private sector. Congratulatory speeches were provided by the Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation, the German Ambassador and the President of ACWUA. Presentations focused on the uniqueness of ACWUA as a regional platform for exchange on best practices among water and wastewater utilities in the Arab region. The Secretary General gave a detailed overview on the status and achievements of ACWUA. A meeting of the Board of Directors followed the launching ceremony, and resulted in numerous decisions, including the structuring and composition of working groups that will guide the substantive work of the association. Through its working groups, ACWUA will focus on the management of utilities, water resources management, water and health, utilities reform, benchmarking as well as capacity building and training. Sixteen cooperative partners engaged themselves to support ACWUA and elected in a separate meeting their representative to the Board of Directors. ESCWA and Germany through the GTZ as well numerous other cooperating partners are committed to continuing their support to ACWUA as a Centre of Excellence in the Arab water sector.
